Biography: Niccolo dell’Abate was born in Modena and began his career there decorating buildings. In 1547, he moved to Bologna where he came under the influence of Parmigianino. He spent most of his time here painting landscapes and scenes of aristocratic life. It was during this time that he also decorated the Palazzo Poggi. Niccolo moved to France in 1552 and remained there until his death. Most of this period was spent working at Fontainebleau under Primaticcio. Niccolo is remembered mostly for his landscapes with mythological figures as the subject. These works inspired later artists such as Claude and Poussin.
