Biography: Sir William Allan, a Scottish historical painter, was born in Edinburgh and worked there for most of his life. He traveled throughout Russia from 1805 to 1814 and began painting subject matters from his experiences abroad. These exotic paintings did not sell well, so Allan turned to Scottish subjects, notably illustrating scenes from the writings of Air Walter Scott.
