Biography: Son of a tapestry maker, Denys van Alsloot was a forerunner in the Brussels landscape school and in 1599, joined the painter’s guild there. He was also appointed official painter to Archduke Albert and his wife Isabella, producing images of landscapes and court events and designing tapestries under their patronage. Alsloots’s landscapes mainly portrayed the forests around Brussels and often included castles and abbeys. He was noted for his mastery of painting foliage and producing topographically accurate images.
