Biography: An important vase-painter in Paestum, South Italy, Asteas was the leader of a large workshop that was thought to have invented the free-standing half-palmettes, a framing technique that was characteristic of Paestan vase-paintings. Asteas worked in the red-figure technique, decorating mostly hydriai and kraters. He was one of few South Italian painters to sign their work and also used inscriptions to label the figures in his scenes. His scenes were primarily of myth, theater, groups of two to three youths, and Dionysus.
