Nationality: French
Movement:
Media: Photography
Influences:
Biography: Eugene Atget was first a painter and then an actor before focusing on photography. His original subjects were the architecture and scenes of Paris in 1898. He was known for working early in the morning and traveling through the streets and gardens carrying his outdated, large-format view camera. His pictures were then often sold to painters as studies. Atget did not receive recognition during his lifetime. However, Man Ray and Bernice Abbott uncovered his work, preserving the prints and negatives and publishing his work outside of France.
