Biography:
Born in Germany, Frank Auerbach moved to England in 1939 to escape Nazi persecution. He gained British citizenship in 1947. Auerbach first studied under David Bomberg, adapting his mentor’s Expressionist approach. Auerbach is known for his use of thick impasto, giving his paintings textural and sculptural qualities.
