Biography: Upon Rembrandt’s moved to Amsterdam in 1631, Jacob Adriaensz. Backer among many other artists rushed to work in his studio. Backer had originally studied in Leeuwarden and then after his brief time with Rembrandt, achieved immediate success. In addition to his commissioned, large group portraits, Backer also created mythological and allegorical works. Although a dedicated follower and supported of Rembrandt’s techniques, he began to emulate Bartholomeus van der Helst’s pale and warm palette in the 1640’s. Later in his career, Backer reverted back to study of Rembrandt’s work while holding the reputation of one of Amsterdam’s most famous painters.
