As a youth, Bartolommeo studied first with a local painter and then worked in Ghirlandaio’s workshop. In 1500, he became a monk and burned all of his paintings that were not of religious subjects. Bartolommeo became the head of the San Marco monastery workshop in 1504. Then in 1508, he became the leading painter in the Florentine school. He traveled to Venice and Rome in 1514 and spread his influence through his drawings. The San Marco workshop closed not long after his death in 1517.
