Biography:
English printmaker, George Baxter patented the first color printing method in 1835. Incorporating the aquatint method, the process involved superimposing the colors using wooden blocks. The process gained popularity and was widely useful in producing replications of paintings. Despite its usefulness, Baxter’s process did not generate a great a deal of wealth for its inventor as other firms were hired to carry out the actual creation of the prints. By the time of Baxter’s death, he was in poverty and lithography became the preferred method of making color prints.
