Biography:
Thomas Bewick was an English engraver who set up a workshop in Newcastle. He mastered the technique of wood engraving and used it to create successful natural history illustrations. He wrote and illustrated the books “A General History of Quadrupeds” in 1790 and “A History of British Birds” in 1797. Bewick’s books made wood engraving the most popular medium for book illustration for most of the 19th century.
