Biography:
Jean Joseph-Xavier Bidauld received his basic artistic training from his older brother before attending the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. He moved to Paris in 1783 and worked for art dealer, Dulac. Dulac paid for Bidauld’s trip to Italy where he remained for five years and painted only landscapes. Between 1791 and 1844, Bidauld was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon and won a Gold Medal in 1812. Unable to abandon Neoclassicism when it fell out of style, his work lost demand and Bidauld died in poverty.
