Biography:
Gerard ter Borch was encouraged and taught to be an arist at an early age by his father, a successful painter. He began studying in Amsterdam at the age of fifteen and then moved to Haarlem where he was admitted to the painters’ guild. He then traveled throughout Europe for a year, working for various patrons. Ter Borch enjoyed a substantial reputation in Holland during his lifetime. He began painting full-length portraits in the 1640’s, and helped to develop that genre which became integral in the second half of the 1600’s.
