Biography: Jerome Van Aken was born in Hertogenbosch in North Brabant, where he lived his entire life. He went by a shortened Latin version of his name, Hieronymus Bosch. His large oil paintings were allegorical and mystical works filled with both religious and mythological symbolism. His work later influenced the Surrealists. There have also been attempts to analyze his paintings in Jungian and Freudian terms, as it is thought that they were replications of Bosch’s nightmares.
