Biography:
First working in portraiture, Matthew Brady received most of his attention for his Civil War Images during the 1800’s. He first began by opening a studio in New York City and taking the portraits of many notable and prominent figures. In 1848, he moved to Washington D.C. to photograph political figures. At the beginning of the Civil War, Brady received permission to follow the Union army and document their battles. At the end of his lifetime, Brady had experienced several financial difficulties and was attempting to sell his photographs the American government.
