Biography: Jorg Breu the Elder was born in Augsberg, the son of a weaver. He was apprenticed to a leading painter in his home city and then worked as a journeyman in Austria from 1500 to 1502. It was during this time that Breu painted three detailed, multi-panel altarpieces. Breu settled in Augsberg and built a large workshop that created history paintings, frescoes, woodcuts, and stained glass windows. He traveled to Italy in 1508 and 1514. The chiaroscuro and Italianate techniques Breu began to incorporate were evidence of these trips. In the 1520’s he continued to paint altarpieces despite the controversy of the Reformation. During this time, his work reflected Mannerist ideas.
