Biography:
Hendrick ter Brugghen began painting at the age of thirteen, possibly studying under Abraham Bloemart. He visited Rome where he was inspired by Caravaggio’s paintings. Returning to Utrecht, Ter Brugghen worked in Gerrit von Honthorst’s studio, where the studio’s painters earned the nickname the Caravaggisti because of their adoption of Caravaggio’s light and emotion. Ter Brugghen’s paintings were in demand and he received steady commissions.
