Biography:
Giorlamo Campagna was the foremost sculptor in Venice in the late 1500’s. He was born in Verona and then moved to Venice in 1572 to study under Danese Cattaneo. When his master died, Campagna took over his commissions, which included several significant public works. He owned a large workshop in Venice and was offered the most important commissions. In 1590, he began producing bronze sculptures while working on the high altars in two major Venetian churches. Campagna’s later work is known for its dramatic and expressive style.
