Biography:
Born in Caravaggio Italy as Michelangelo Merisi, he was trained in Milan and Venice. Shortly thereafter, he traveled to Rome and painted and made altarpieces under the commission of Cardinal del Monte. Caravaggio was a leader in the Naturalisti painters, combining an emphasis on light and shadow and realism. Although his paintings were supposed to reflect religious imagery, Caravaggio held little regard for accuracy in his depiction of Christian figures. He went exile in 1606, after killing a man during an argument, and did not return to Italy until 1609 where he died from a fever in Sicily.
