Biography: Much of Juan del Castillo’s life is unknown, but the native Seville artist’s career lasted from 1611 to 1650 and established him as a major painter in his time. Castillo was apprenticed to Esteban Murillo and the brother-in-law of Alonso Cano. His style was derived from the influence of local artists and the Venetian paintings that were common in Spain. In 1636, Castillo received his most important commission, a series of altarpiece paintings for a convent in Seville.
