Biography:
Paul Cézanne was the son of a prosperous banker in Aix-de-Provence, who studied painting in Paris. He embraced Impressionism, and like Renoir, strived to paint interpretations of his own visual experiences. He created 1300 paintings in his career, all which retained a sense mystery, as none of them were dated and very few were signed. His first few Impressionist exhibition from 1874 to 1877, were criticized, which discouraged Cézanne from avidly displaying his works. He moved to his family home and spent most of his time isolated there except for a few visits to Paris and Ile-de-France. It wasn’t until the late 1890’s that Cézanne finally received recognition for his work when his influence was noted in the paintings of younger artists. Many of these artists observed Cézanne’s tendencies to be rude, nervous, and generally disagreeable. In 1920, he abandoned impressionism altogether and incorporated more elements of design in his work. Because of this shift, Cézanne is thought to be a precursor to abstract art.
