Biography: After teaching in New Orleans, Claude-Joseph Desire Charnay began a nomadic lifestyle, traveling throughout France, and the United States initially. In 1857, he visited Mexico where he was inspired to photograph the pre-Columbian ruins. Charnay spent three months on an island in Madagascar writing and taking photographs for the a French imperialist expedition. He published a description of that trip with engraved illustrations that were derived from his photographs. He later returned to Mexico and then toured South America, Indonesia and Australia taking photographs of the native populations.
