Biography:
Giovanni Battista Cima da Conegliano moved to Rome in the mid 1480's where his training is uncertain. However, his work shows obvious influence of Giovanni Bellini. His paintings contain monumental figures contrasted with calm landscapes and architectural backgrounds, which often were derived from his hometown Conegliano’s country sides and villages. Cima became Venice’s leading altarpiece painter in the 1490's. His workshop also produced half-length Virgin and Child paintings and some mythological subjects.
