Biography: Thomas Cole was born in Lancashire, England and began his career as an apprentice to and engraver of textile designs. In 1818, he moved his family to the United States, and worked in Philadelphia as an engraver. He then settled in Steubenville, Ohio and began to study art under an unknown mentor. He attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and moved to New York in 1825. His paintings of familiar American landscapes such as the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains became very well known and popular. After a visit to Europe from 1829 to 1832, Cole settled in New York and began a large series of paintings that depicted the rise and fall of civilization.
