Biography: Cornelis Cornelisz van Haarlem was born into a wealthy family and studied in Haarlem before moving to Rouen in 1579. He then studied for about a year in Antwerp and then returned to his native city. His first commission was a militia company portrait that became indicative of Dutch group portraits and influenced later artists such as Frans Hals. He was also the first Dutch artist to study the nude figure and made that the focus of his drawings. Cornelisz was made famous in 1588 with Goltzius’s engravings that were derived from five of his paintings. After that, Cornelisz produced many drawings and prints and was also named the city painter of Haarlem and played an active role in the reorganization of the Guild of Saint Luke.
