Biography:
Giovanni Battista Crespi was born in the small Italian town Cerano but worked mostly in Milan. He worked briefly in Rome before settling in Milan in the late 1590’s where he worked for Cardinal Federico Borromeo, the archbishop of Milan. The Cardinal founded the Accademia Ambrosiana in 1620 and put Crespi as the head of the painting department. He also hired him to oversee the sculptural decoration of the Milan Cathedral in 1629. Crespi’s paintings are a combination of Mannerist and Baroque styles.
