Biography: The Darius Painter is a pseudonym for an artist who lived in southern Italy in the late 300’s B.C. He decorated pottery using the red-figure technique and is identified by the characteristics of his work. The Darius Painter was one of the first to decorate large vases and adapted his composition to accommodate such large space. His decorations focused on myths and episodes from paintings. He acquired his name from a vase in Naples that shows the Persian King Darius.
