Biography:
Willem de Kooning began his artistic career early apprenticing to commercial art firm in the Nethlerlands at the age of 12. He received his training from the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts and moved to New York in 1925. He shared studio space with Arshille Gorky in the early 1930’s, gaining exposure to the Surrealist movement. After successfully leading the development of the movement with his dynamic painting, de Kooning turned toward clay sculpting late in his career.
