Biography:
A child prodigy, John Deare was born into a family of jewelers. He had a natural talent for carving and began his first apprenticeship at the age of seventeen. He entered the Royal Academy in 1777 and was the youngest artist to win the school’s gold medal. The Academy also awarded him a grant to study in Rome for three years beginning in 1785. Deare worked there creating commissions from English tourists. He also produced several portrait busts and copies of antique sculptures. In addition, his most recognized works are a series of reliefs that depict historical, allegorical, and mythological subjects. Deare died in Rome at the young age of thirty-eight.
