Biography: Desiderio was born in the village of Settignano located outside of Florence. Known as the place where Michelangelo discovered his love of marble cutting, Desiderio da Settignano also took up sculpture. He was following in the family tradition as his father was a stone carver and his brothers were stonemasons. Desiderio is best known for his portrait busts and reliefs although he also created freestanding statues and crucifixes. He might have collaborated with Donatello, where he learned the technique of low relief. Desiderio joined the stone and woodworkers’ guild in 1453 and received his first and last commission to create a tomb in a Florentine church.
