Biography: Domenichino first studied with a Flemish artist before switching to the Carracci academy and becoming the assistant to Ludovico. In 1602, he began working on ceiling murals for the Farnese Palace along with Annibale Carracci, Guido Reni, and Lanfranco. Domenichino preferred to paint landscapes, specializing in easel paintings and works on copper. By 1614, he was Rome’s leading painter and began working for Pope Gregory XV in 1621. Ten years later, Domenichino traveled to Naples to continue Reni’s commission at a chapel. He died in 1641, leaving the chapel unfinished.
