Biography: Although little is known about Domenico Veneziano, he was a significant figure of Italian painting. According to his name, he was born in Venice but he first appears on record in Perugia in 1438. Spending most of his career in Florence, he was responsible for introducing an interest in color and texture to oil painting in that region. Also, his only known frescoes were documented here from 1439 to 1445, which depicted the life of the Virgin Mary. This work has since been destroyed and only two of his other works survive to date, Virgin and Child Enthroned and the St. Lucy Altarpiece.
