Biography:
Gustave Doré was first introduced to caricature drawing by famous cartoonist and his employer, Charles Philipon. During this time, Doré’s own drawings were published in Le Journal pour Rire. In the 1860’s, Doré began illustrating books and his most noted for his wood engravings for Dante’s Inferno and Cervantes’ Don Quixote. His style was similar to Romanticism, but later turned to realism, producing images of the poor and homeless in Paris.
