Biography:
Although he was born in New York, Robert Stuart Duncanson was raised in Canada by his Scottish father. He is thought to have studied in Scotland before returning to the United States and moving in with his mother in Cincinnati. Duncanson was a known artist by that time, recognized for his portraits, still-lifes, genre subjects and landscapes. Duncanson was the first black American professional painter and received a grant from the Anti-Slavery League to study in Europe in 1853.
