Biography:
Born of Flemish descent, Francois Duquesnoy moved to Rome in 1618 and spent the majority of his career there. From 1627 to 1628, he assisted the city’s leading sculptor, Bernini in the decoration of the Baldacchino in St. Peter’s. He also made a living for a short time restoring antique sculpture. As a result, Duquesnoy’s style of sculpture differed from Bernini’s Baroque approach and was more classical. He produced two public sculptures during his career, but was better known for the smaller works. This body of work included reliefs and statues typically done of religious or mythological subjects. He worked in bronze, terracotta, ivory, and wax.
