Biography:
Sometimes called the father of Danish painting, Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg was a leading figure of Danish art and a strong influence on his fellow artists. He first trained in Copenhagen before studying under Jacques-Louis David in Paris from 1811 to 1813. He then studied in Rome until 1816 when he returned to Copenhagen. He became a professor at the Academy and was the first to teach painting from nature to his students. He painted portraits, landscapes, Danish history, marine subjects, and religious pieces.
