Biography:
Gerbrand van den Eeckhout studied under Rembrandt van Rijn in the late 1630’s. He was also influenced by Rembrandt’s mentor, Pieter Lastman. His teacher’s works, especially in their use of narrative, color and chiaroscuro, inspired Van den Eeckhout’s historical paintings. His portraits were more elegantly produced and sometimes placed within his historical scenes, creating a genre called the portraits-histoires.
