Biography: Born in Candia, Crete as Domenikos Theotokopulos, El Greco was his adopted nickname meaning ‘The Greek” in Spanish. He worked in Crete as a Byzantine icon painter under he moved to Italy, where he is thought to have been mentored by Titian. He eventually settled in Toledo, where he developed his unique style incorporating elongation and distortion of figures in subdued colors. He typically painted religious figures as well as portraits of fellow artists. He spent the last years of his life in Toledo, where the Museo El Greco stands today containing many of his works.
