Biography:
Russian painter and designer, Alexandra Exter first visited Paris in 1908 and visited there regularly until World War I. Thus, her style was a mixture of Russian and western avant-garde styles such as Cubism and Futurism. She began teaching out of her own studios in Odessa in 1917 and then in Kiev from 1918 to 1921. Exter was also a successful stage designer, most recognized for her work for Alexander Tairov’s Kamerny Theatre in Moscow from 1916 to 1921. She moved to Paris in 1924 and remained in France until her death in 1949.
