Biography: Marc Ferrez was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil into a family of French artists. He returned to Paris to receive his formal education and then moved back to Brazil to produce urban photographs of his hometown. In 1865, Ferrez began his own studio that specialized in landscape. Emperor Dom Pedro II of Brazil supported Ferrez’s artistic endeavors. In 1873, after his studio was destroyed in a fire, he traveled to France and purchased a new camera. He returned to Brazil and became interested in rural landscapes and scenes of plantations and slaves. He was a member of the Brazilian Geological Commission and a master of the panoramic photograph. Eventually, he created a new studio, taught photography and began a photographic supply house. In 1870’s and 1880’s, Ferrez exhibited throughout the United States and Europe. At this time, he focused on architecture and street scenes. In 1907, Ferrez opened the Pathe Cinema in Rio de Janeiro.
