Biography: Giovanni Battista Foggini trained in Florence before being sent to Rome in 1673 by Cosimo III de’Medici to attend the Accademia Fiorentina. When he returned to Rome in 1676, his style had become characteristic of the Baroque period. Foggini was appointed grand ducal sculptor in 1687 and became the court architect not long after. He was commissioned to produce portrait busts of the Medici and other Florentine celebrities and reliefs for several chapels in the city. His students carried on his style after his death until the development of Neoclassicism.
