Biography:
Lucio Fontana studied at the Brera Academy in Milan. In 1935 signed the First Manifesto of Italian Abstract Art, focusing on sculpture until after World War II. His paintings were created with a very restricted color palette, and in 1946 he painted a series of paintings only with shades of white. Fontana created Spatialism in 1947, a style of Minimalist art in which a painted canvas is cut to add dimension. Fontana’s work was influential in the development of abstract and conceptual art.
