Biography: Francesco di Giorgio Martini studied with Vecchietta and first produced illuminated manuscripts. Donatello, Ghiberti, and Antonio del Pallaiuolo influenced his sculpture. Francesco also became one of Italy’s leading architects and worked in Urbino for Federigo da Montefeltro. In addition, he served as a diplomat and wrote the first significant Western writings on military engineering. Francesco was the epitome of a Renaissance man who also worked at the courts in Urbino, Naples, and Milan.
