Biography: Otto Freundlich studied in Munich and Berlin and then moved to Paris in 1909 and came under the influence of Picasso. He returned to Germany in 1911 to exhibit at the Neue Sezession in 1911. He also served in the German military during World War I, which during this time he joined the Aktion artist group. He worked on stained glass in the Chartres Cathedral, which probably influenced his later kaleidoscope paintings. In 1924, Freundlich returned to Paris and began A bis Z, a magazine that concentrated on avant-garde art. The Nazis condemned Fruendlich’s work as degenerate during World War II. Subsequently, after being interned by the French government, he moved to the Pyrenees and repainted his destroyed paintings. In 1943, Freundlich was moved to Majdanek concentration camp where he died in 1943.
