Biography: Born in Pori, Finland, Akseli Gallen-Kallela studied and lived in Paris beginning in 1884. While there he studied Finnish culture and painted landscapes of his native country’s wintry lakes and forests. Also known for portraiture, Gallen-Kallela combined his landscape and figure painting in a triptych that illustrated Finnish mythology. He also illustrated the epic poem, Kalevala and the writings of Aleksis Kivi.
