Biography: Artemisia Gentileschi was born in Rome and trained as painter by her father Orazio, and influenced by realist painter, Caravaggio. Gentileschi became famous during her time for her portaiture, however she also painted religious scenes that focused on the Biblical women. At the age of 19, Artemisia accused one of her father’s colleagues of raping her, which resulted in a five month trial and ultimately the torturing of the victim.
