Biography:
Although born in France, Francois Gerard was raised in Rome where he acquired his adoration of classical Italian painting. In 1782, he returned to Paris and trained under sculptor Augustin Pajou and painter Jacques-Louis David. He became the latter’s assistant in 1791. Two years later, he began supporting himself and his younger brother by illustrating literature editions. He reputation as a portraitist was founded in 1796 when he received a portrait commission from miniature painter, Jean-Baptiste Isabey. Gerard was honored in all of the post French Revolution courts and was made a baron by Louis XVIII in 1789.
