Biography:
Francois-Thomas Germain inherited his famous silversmith father’s career, workshop, and clients at the age of twenty-two. He was employed by the French royalty who commissioned him to make tableware, chandeliers, and church silver among other items. He received many international commissions from countries that included Russia and Portugal. In 1765, Germain made partnerships with several financiers to receive the debt owed to him from some clients. As this practice was against the goldsmiths’ guild regulations, he was forced to declare bankruptcy and resign from his position as royal silversmith. Germain’s career was ended as a result and he remained out of the public eye until his death in 1791.
