Biography:
Jacques de Gheyn II was trained by his father before moving to Haarlem in 1585 to study with Hendrick Goltzius. After moving to Leiden in the mid-1590’s, Gheyn switched from engraving to painting and etching. He later moved to The Hague and worked for many of Holland’s rulers. Gheyn and Goltzius produced some of the first female nudes in Dutch art. He also painted early still lifes and flower paintings. While living in Amsterdam, Gheyn designed engraved illustrations for a military training manual.
