Biography: Born in Dolomites, Italy, Gilbert Proesch studied at the Academy of Art in Munich. English born, George Pasmore trained at Dartington Hall and the Oxford School of Art. The two met at St. Martin’s School of Art in London and began working together upon their graduation. They began working as performance artists in the late 1960’s, as “living sculptures.” Gilbert and George also produce two-dimensional art, combining photography with painting. Their work is controversial because of its references to homosexuality and its seemingly supportive attitudes toward fascism and racism.
