Biography:
Julio Gonzales first learned the metalworking trade from his father who was a goldsmith and sculptor. However, Gonzales worked mostly as a painter in his early career. In 1900, he moved to Paris where he encountered Picasso and formed a lasting friendship with the famous artist. In the 1920’s, Gonzales devoted himself to metal sculpture. He is most famous for his sculpture entitled Montserrat, which was created as a memorial for the victims of the Spanish Civil war.
